Mental Health First Aid for Young People

After taking our two-day Youth MHFA course you will be able to:

  • Recognise the symptoms and signs of mental health issues
  • Be able to Approach, Assess and Assist a young person who may want you to listen or who may need information
  • Guide a young person towards appropriate professional help
  • Encourage other supports

MHFA will not teach you how to be a therapist, but once you have completed the two day course you will have a national certificate to prove you are a Youth Mental Health First Aider.

Quality assured MHFA instructors deliver training that has been designed to fit into two days in four sections:

  • What is Mental Health First Aid; facts/information about mental health
  • Depression and suicidal crisis, Anxiety Disorders
  • Eating disorders and self -harm
  • Psychosis and bipolar disorder

In each section you’ll learn how to:

  • Spot the early signs of a mental health issue
  • Be able to assist someone experiencing a mental health issue
  • Provide help on a first aid basis
  • Help prevent someone from hurting themselves or others
  • Help prevent a mental health issue from getting worse
  • Help someone recover faster
  • Guide someone towards the right support
  • Reduce the stigma of mental health issues

Colin Tucker is an experienced Primary School Head teacher and education advisor
